For this pattern I used:
Yarn & Amounts: One 100g hank of WYS Bluefaced Leicester Aran. (100% Bluefaced Leicester wool, 166m/182yds per 100g).
I used shade 01 Natural Ecru.
My Yarn Suggestion & Amounts: I love the traditional look of the Ecru with this hat design however if you wanted a colourful hat that’s a bit different I suggest trying WYS The Croft Shetland Tweed Aran (100% Shetland wool, 166m/182yds per 100g).
Needles: 4.5mm and 5mm.
Notions: Cable needle.
Tension: 24 stitches and 26 rows to 10cm square over cable pattern when slightly stretched using 5mm needles.
Measurements: to fit average size head.
Skill level: ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ◊
The high Skill Level for this hat is due to the cable, it is a super easy cable but for those that haven’t cabled before it needs a few rows to get used to the pattern before it becomes second nature.
My design ideas and advice: I designed this hat because knitters were asking me to design an adult version of the Clapdale Hat from my Knitted With Love book. So I’ve named this Clapham after the village in the Clapdale valley, which is “just up the road” from Skipton!
We tried this hat on every head at my Yarnaholics group and found it fitted all head sizes. We measured all our heads as we had one or two knitters who thought they had big heads that hats couldn’t fit on, we found that we all have heads that were a similar size with a difference of 5cm between the smallest and largest. This hat fitted everyone’s head perfectly.
