MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
I love this design because it uses my favourite stitch – garter stitch – with a simple edge detail that’s so effective. The edges curl up prettily, like little waves. When I look at this scarf, I can’t help but daydream of the sea gently lapping over the beach and creating ripples in the sand.
The pattern begins with just 6 stitches, increases out into a half-crescent shape, then decreases back down to 6 stitches. It might sound a little tricky if you’re a beginner, but I’ve added notes in the pattern to explain the process – it’s easier than it looks and very satisfying to master.
This is one of those designs that knitters return to again and again. I often see people pop back into the Skipton studio wearing theirs, ready to pick up another shade for the next one… and then another one!
I first designed the Tara Scarf in 2011 in DK, then updated it in 2016, and again in 2023 with a chunky version. Knitting it again after 7 years felt like rediscovering an old favourite. It only took a couple of repeats to get back into the rhythm, and before long I barely needed to look at the pattern. For beginners, the yarn overs might take a little getting used to, but once you do, this becomes such a relaxing and enjoyable knit.

CONSTRUCTION
Knitted flat in one piece from the bottom up.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, simple lace edging, cast off.
YARN
For chunky Two 100g hanks of Studio Donegal Soft Chunky.
100% merino wool,125m/136yds per 100g
For dk Two 50g balls of Hjertegarn merino cotton DK.
50% merino wool & 50% cotton, 120m/131yds per 50g
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
For chunky: 6mm
For dk: 4mm
GAUGE (tension)
For chunky: 14 stitches and 28 rows to 10cm square over garter stitch. I obtained this gauge with 6mm needles.
For dk: 22 stitches and 40 rows to 10cm square over garter stitch. I obtained this gauge with 4mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
SIZE AND FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
For chunky: approx. 21cm (at widest part) x 164cm.
For dk: approx. 15cm (at widest part) x 140cm.
